Early Life

Neil Gaiman was born in Portchester, Hampshire, UK, to Jewish parents of Polish descent. His father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked in the same chain of stores, while his mother, Sheila Gaiman (née Goldman), was a pharmacist. Neil was the eldest of three children, with two younger sisters named Claire and Lizzy. From a young age, Gaiman was a voracious reader, finding inspiration in the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Edgar Allan Poe, and many others. For his tenth birthday, he asked for a shed and received a kit of pine boards, which his parents assembled at the bottom of the garden, reflecting his early penchant for solitude and creativity. Although he did not pursue a formal collegiate education, Gaiman attended several primary and boarding schools, including Ardingly College and Whitgift School. His deep love for books and storytelling was evident early on, setting the stage for his future career as a celebrated writer.
